“Semmering 2030+ Model” is an innovative approach to landscape architecture that aims to preserve the natural beauty of the Semmering region while creating sustainable recreational and leisure opportunities. By combining environmental sustainability with cultural heritage, the project’s goal is to promote a harmonious balance between people and nature.

The panoramic municipality of Semmering, nestled amidst breathtaking landscapes, once stood as a beacon of leisure and recreation for the Viennese elite in the 19th century. Its charm and allure were significantly magnified with the advent of the Semmering railway in 1854, ushering in a golden era of prosperity and cultural vibrancy around the turn of the century and into the early decades of the 20th century. However, the aftermath of the war marked a pivotal moment, leading to a gradual decline from which Semmering has struggled to rebound.

Acknowledging its historical, cultural and architectural significance, the Semmering Railway was honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. This distinction not only highlighted the engineering marvel that the railway represents but also reignited global interest in Semmering, attracting railway enthusiasts and tourists from across the globe to this scenic spot.

Amidst this rich historical tapestry endowed with remarkable natural beauty and infrastructure lies a vision to breathe new life into Semmering. The goal is to meticulously craft a cohesive and vibrant townscape that mirrors the grandeur and splendour it once radiated. Ecoplus Alpin GmbH, with the support of CMb.industries GmbH is at the forefront of this ambitious endeavour and, thus, called LAND, to develop new and sustainable solutions, reconnecting people with nature.

Their mission is to forge a forward-looking blueprint for Semmering’s rejuvenation, so we thoroughly explored the town’s existing potential, with an analysis of its challenges, and pinpointing critical areas for development. By projecting these insights into future planning, the aim is restoring Semmering’s historical glory with a “Naturpromenade” and ensure its sustainable growth and prosperity, again making it a jewel in the crown of recreational destinations.
