Via Orti in Milan, Green Regeneration
Italy
A synthesis of historical and architectural tradition, Via Orti extends and completes the quadrilateral of the Orti di Milano (Milan Gardens) between Corso di Porta Romana and Viale Emilio Caldara. Cloisters, interior gardens, and ancient residences conceal the dual essence behind the rebirth of this vital urban space for Milan.

The project to enhance Via Orti aims to emphasise this rich identity, combining its potential as an attractive and iconic place for the cultural and historical soul of this part of the city in a new guise. The Via Orti project stems from the desire to re-appropriate public space through the urban and landscape enhancement of the place. The new street marks the reconquest of a human dimension of living in urban open spaces in a context currently fragmented and occupied by car parks.
The project fits ante litteram into a vision of urban regeneration that brings added value to the mixture of the public and private spheres. It envisions more space for pedestrians, safety for people and children, slow mobility and cycling, and presence of greenery. These objectives translate into a project for a complete overhaul of the road network and road logistics, with a significant widening of the pavement to allow people to walk safely and stop in the shade of trees, thanks to the planting of a tree line along the road. Shaded spaces and tables outside bars and restaurants complete the picture of a new neighbourhood model that brings greenery, liveability and a sense of community into the heart of Milan.
