Palmaria is an Italian island in the Ligurian Sea at the westernmost end of the Gulf of La Spezia. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the island is celebrated for its unspoiled natural beauty and rich historical heritage, particularly its military architecture. The landscape is a stunning example of the rugged Ligurian coast, featuring Mediterranean maquis, steep cliffs, and crystal-clear waters. Despite its proximity to the mainland, Palmaria has remained sparsely populated, with much of its historical fortifications and buildings left abandoned over time.
Culturally, the island holds significant value, not only for its military past but also as part of the broader cultural and historical context of Liguria. The island’s history is intertwined with that of the neighbouring town of Portovenere and the Cinque Terre, all of which share the same dramatic coastal scenery and a history of maritime defence.
The Masterplan for Palmaria envisions the requalification and enhancement of this unique territory, aiming to transform the island into a hub for new forms of hospitality and sustainable tourism. This approach seeks to preserve the island’s natural and cultural assets while providing tangible benefits to the local economy and improving the quality of life for its inhabitants, even in the short to medium term. The plan also aims to protect and celebrate the island’s rich heritage while fostering a deeper connection between visitors and the landscape.
