The World’s First Sustainable District – Milano Porta Nuova
Milan's Porta Nuova district achieved the first dual LEED® and WELL® for Community certification, which measure the social, environmental and economic sustainability of regeneration at an urban scale.
Why is it crucial for our communities to make sustainability visible and measurable?
Last week – for the first time in the world – Milan’s Porta Nuova district achieved the first dual LEED® and WELL® for Community certification, which measure the social, environmental and economic sustainability of regeneration at an urban scale. The international recognition was awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council and the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) and testifies to the need for a radical but replicable model of urban development.
Our Sustainability Compass had already been able to make visible the impact of the district in terms of nature, economy, social and well-being. An essential tool on which to build the future of urban regeneration. The international recognition also marks an important turnaround in the design outlined by the United Nations 2030 agenda. Natural Capital Accounting takes shape in improving the living conditions of citizens by remembering that reconnecting people with nature is always a good idea.
Thanks to all who have participated in the project over the years and to all the partners for reaching an important milestone that is only a starting point for breaking it up!
