New publication 'ESSEN.RUHRMETROPOLE. Urban development 21+": Andreas Kipar on New Urbanity

The publication of "ESSEN.RUHRMETROPOLE. Urban Development 21+," edited by Martin Harter, Dieter Nellen, and Uli Paetzel for publisher Kettler Verlag, documents the profound transformation of the city of Essen in the context of industrial restructuring. Andreas Kipar contributes to this work in various chapters.

Reflecting on new urbanity, Andreas Kipar focuses on Essen’s Green Rays model as a flexible and dynamic urban development concept that utilises the city’s existing potential to create green connections. As part of the ‘ESSEN. The Neue Wege zum Wasser’ programme has been running for over 15 years; the city is being transformed into a green metropolis through numerous ecological and hydraulic engineering projects.

The model integrates old railway lines and expands the cycle and footpath system so that over 71% of Essen’s population can access these green paths within 500 metres. It promotes sustainable urban development that responds to the challenges of climate change and the changing needs of city dwellers.

Particularly noteworthy is Andreas’ statement, ‘The Ruhr area needs colour’ in which he describes how former industrial landscapes are being transformed into green, round, and colourful urban spaces. Kipar emphasises that the future of the Ruhr region is “round and colourful”, a development approach that puts people first.

The publication, a collaborative effort directed by Dr. Ruth Hanisch, delves into the structural transformation of the city of Essen in various thematic chapters. Contributions from a diverse group of experts shed light on the urban transformation process of the Ruhr metropolis from different perspectives, enriching the understanding of this complex process.

The book presentation takes place on 17.09.2024 at the Colosseum Theatre Essen with a press conference at 12AM and a panel discussion and networking event at 13.00.
