LAND Germany Wuppertal Bandwirkerquartier competition design site plan - Konnrath und Wennemar
The ‘Bandwirkerquartier’ residential quarter has to meet the challenge of an unusual topography, as the area rises by 18 metres from the lowest point on Marktstrasse to the southern boundary at Heckersklef. This difference in height is visually and functionally mastered by a staircase combined with seating steps and a green character in the form of green islands with grasses paired with tree planting. Barrier-free access is ensured by a lift system in the northern part of the neighbourhood.
The deciduous trees along the steps are strikingly coloured in autumn and stand out from the rest of the trees. Generously cut private gardens sufficiently round off the green ensemble. The strong greening of the neighbourhood counteracts the heat island effect, with trees providing sufficient shade, especially in summer.
There are three neighbourhood squares in total. Two playgrounds resemble neighbourhood courtyards, the hill playground to the north working with the topography of the area. In addition to a hill for climbing, there is a north-east-facing depression with a depth of 30 to 50 cm, which acts as a retention area for heavy rainfall events and also invites children to play. Another retention area is located to the east of the large neighbourhood square. The forest playground to the south-west is characterised by its surrounding trees. When selecting the play equipment, only natural materials were used.
