CariGO GREEN3, Isonzo XR - The botanical and multimedial narrative route of Viatori Garden

Italy

Isonzo XR is the third project of Digital Landscape, which develops the CariGO GREEN³ programme, after Carso 2014+ and Collio XR. It has combined nature, culture, and socio-economic development with the new evolutionary opportunities of the digital age.

Isonzo XR is the third project of Digital Landscape, which develops the CariGO GREEN³ programme, after Carso 2014+ and Collio XR. It has combined nature, culture, and socio-economic development with the new evolutionary opportunities of the digital age.

In line with the aims formally set down by the European Green Deal and by the subsequent Climate Law, the vision of the LAND strategy for CariGO GREEN³ is that of a Productive Landscape: an integrated ecosystem of nature, infrastructures, cultural environments and economic activities that networks the various sectors and local players in a context of active participation, enabling the individual elements to develop and favour each other reciprocally.

The two concepts of Innovation and Nature are at the root of Isonzo XR, which aspires to create a new touch point in the strategic area along the River Isonzo, valuing the historical, naturalistic and cultural elements of a territory and making connections within it and with the surrounding contexts. The decision to complete thematic routes of tourism and cultural interest through digital creates a system of interchange points, the Slovenian area’s natural mountain heritage, the Italian outlet’s lagoon area, the rural areas, places of historical interest and a multifunctional Hub.

In this way, the project restores the Isonzo’s centrality from three perspectives: as a link between Italy and Slovenia, as a linear park between mountain and sea, and as an element of connection between the outstanding features of the location.

The intensification of the relationships will mirror the network of connections created by the Digital Landscape model developed by LAND’s research with the technological expertise of IKON. As in the case of the Collio, the discovery of the landscape along the Lower Isonzo (from Gorizia to its mouth) will also take place through a highly immersive narrative journey, which every visitor can access with their smartphone thanks to the Isonzo XR App, which is in the phase of realisation.

This is a project that values the entire area of the Isonzo and, for the first time, includes digital storytelling, captivating narrations telling of the territory, soundscapes, a narration through audio-immersive content, interactive maps with navigation and a guide to the routes through interactive mapping, and virtual and augmented reality, with fully immersive videos and augmented 3D content in the areas where you stop off.

“Isonzo XR succeeds in its intention to create a new way of telling the cultural and natural heritage; as we intended from the beginning, it hits the target of ‘making the invisible visible’. The immersive and interactive nature experience in the Digital Landscape is an opportunity to create awareness and explore concrete actions working towards a model of sustainable development in line with the 17 goals of the U.N. Agenda, meeting the challenge of climate change with regenerative development projects.”— Matteo Pedaso, Senior Director and Partner of LAND Italia

Throughout the entire cycle route along the Isonzo, you will be able to access cycle and pedestrian narrative circuits of the historical-cultural and environmental type supported by virtual reality and augmented reality: Sasaki, Memories of the Isonzo, The Secret Journey of Leonardo, and The Paradise of the Cona.

The georeferenced narration introduces a new way of using and enjoying the territory in the architecture of the landscape. This innovative but non-invasive approach succeeds in its intention to connect people with nature. The experimental exploration of the Isonzo focuses on the concept of authenticity and the importance of slow mobility is accessible to all and in line with new demands in the post-pandemic era, with a preference for outdoor activities that are highly eco-sustainable, respecting safety and social distancing.
