Elsa-Brändström-Realschule, First Prize
LAND and JSWD Architekten have won the first prize in the competition for the new construction of the Elsa-Brändström secondary school announced by the German city of Rheine.
The competition task was to design a new school building for the existing Elsa-Brändström secondary school on the site of the Emslandstadion in Rheine. To be specific, participants were asked to present a proposal for the construction of the school and the sports hall and investigate a possible expansion of the district’s sports facilities.
Connected by a continuous play and sports belt, the school and the sports hall create an urban unit in which the two elements function completely independently of each other from a temporal and functional point of view. The building’s geometry creates entrance areas for pupils and teachers coming from different directions. At the same time, different break areas are created to suit the needs of the different age groups.
Around the new school’s central foyer, the school’s individual functional areas develop in a flower shape. The foyer, auditorium, self-learning centre and an all-day area on the ground floor form a versatile area that can also be used outside school hours. The classrooms arranged along the outer façade enclose the three attractive atriums to which learning islands are assigned. The result is a flexible yet cohesive “learning landscape” that considers all age groups.
The sports hall is planned as a separate building block in the site’s northeast corner. A foyer with a passageway allows access from the street Salzbergener Straße and the south across the play and sports belt. Since the sports hall is located on the second floor, the ground floor can be used for the changing rooms and a wide range of other sports rooms for both the students and the sports club. This guarantees an optimal link for the possible expansion of the sports facilities in the district and, thus, the development of a beautiful sports and leisure offer in the area.
