Porto Vecchio, Porto Vivo – The Trieste Model
Reconnecting the port to the city - as in the Trieste model - means reconquering and taking up its spaces to make them a living, breathing part of the urban fabric in the union of nature and culture.
The Porto Vecchio of Trieste is an enclosed piece of the city, active and alive in the memory of the citizens of Trieste but inaccessible by modern standards. It is a place that requires respect, listening to the citizens, the territory, and its landscape vocation.
The Porto Vivo public space project takes shape from these assumptions. It is a project to connect, to open up the existing city, and to resume the dialectic between built and unbuilt, of which Trieste is a particular master.
A dialectic city between open and closed, which lives from an intrinsic relationship with the sea, is now opening up to a new phase in its life. We started from the unbuilt and modelled our ideas around the ‘Urban Pentagram‘, a score made up of axes and pauses, where the axes are the avenues parallel to the sea, each with its own thematic identity, while the piers are the cuts from the city towards the sea, serving as pauses between the axes and as cross-connections. Open and green spaces also have specific identities—a spatial but social pentagram connecting the Karst and the sea.
It is an innovative project, but above all, replicable wherever there is a port disconnected from the rest of the city. An opportunity to regenerate and open spaces to citizens and visitors through the values of measurable and visible sustainability. Spaces that breathe and where you can breathe.
As in the Trieste model, reconnecting the port to the city means reconquering and taking up its spaces to make them a living, breathing part of the urban fabric in the union of nature and culture.
