Launch of Green Connect, Vilnius
Launch of Green Connect, station makeover and urban regeneration in Vilnius with Zaha Hadid Architects.
It was in September 2021 when the team led by Zaha Hadid Architects with local architects CLOUD architektai, engineers Sweco Lietuva UAB and LAND for the landscape won the competition for the future railway station in Vilnius, Lithuania, with their proposal “Green Connect “. Today, the project launch was held by the clients LTG Infra and Vilnius City Municipality, with a celebration in Vilnius attended for LAND by our COO, Jens Hoffmann.
It was an excellent occasion to spread LAND’s mission, #reconnectingpeoplewithnature, in the presence of Remigijus Šimašius, the Mayor of Vilnius, and the British Ambassador, Brian Olley, at the reception to celebrate the launch of the architectural project.
The old Soviet station needed an overhaul, with particular attention to urban connections, especially with the public spaces near the station precinct and the neighbourhoods. The bridge station, which stretches 46 metres wide, 150 metres long, and 10 metres above the track, will become a new landmark of the city.
And the landscape design? Green is literally everywhere, with great attention to enhancing urban biodiversity and integrating the preexisting trees. A green strip on the bridge connects the rear and front of the station area with its public plaza and the rain garden. At the same time, shrubs and trees accompany the citizens towards the new residential quarter, uniquely mixing between public and private areas. The landscape will improve outdoor comfort and guarantee the liveability of the new urban spaces. A green connection for Vilnius, inviting people to gather, stay and enjoy the city’s new transport hub.
